In the past years, there has been a drastic rise in the popularity of electronic music, more commonly referred to as Electronica or Techno music. More and more top DJs from all over the world have started international tours, and are respected as musicians, such as Steve Aoki, Paul Van Dyk, and DJ Tiesto. If you are a fan of any of these DJs, or even just a Techno enthusiast, and want to be your own DJ, all you need to start with is the right choice of DJ mixers. A DJ mixer is basically a device that is meant to be fitted in between two decks, the so-called “instruments” of electronic music, and the amplification system. Do not confuse this with the studio mixers. What differentiates the DJ mixers from studio mixers are two key components:
- It can re-direct the audio to a port for headphones, so the DJ can hear the music even if it is not playing.
- There is a crossfader so as to have smoother transitions between two audio tracks.
A DJ mixer may have a range of around two to six channels for different audio sources, and it is the DJ who mixes them together, producing what is called a “mix” which is basically two or more songs that are of the same beat and tempo, being thrown together to create a fluid mash-up. The simplest DJ mixers have two sound channels, and is fine when you are just starting out, but the more complicated and advanced your music gets, the more expensive the DJ equipment gets, also.
The simplest way to understand how DJ mixers work is that it is basically used for the cueing of the different audios between one path and another. The cue function of a DJ mixer is the first thing that you will have to master when trying to learn to be a certified disc jockey. The more complicated options should be explored further on when you are more advanced and experienced, options such as using different kinds of turntables, creating mixes along with a singer/rapper going along with the music, and even attaching even more complicated equipment such as launchpads and different kinds of special effects.
If you are wondering how much to spend on DJ mixers, you just have to remember that it will mostly depend on the features that you are looking for. The simpler ones that are meant for beginners will surely be a lot cheaper than those that are meant for professional disc jockeys.
